A Dog’s Guide to Isle of Palms

Pet Friendly Things to Do on Isle of Palms, SC

Dear Visiting Dogs,

Welcome to Isle of Palms, South Carolina.

Your humans may think they planned this beach vacation for themselves, but between you and me, this island is actually a dog paradise. There are sandy beaches, breezy walks, outdoor restaurants, and even friendly humans who will come hang out with you if your people need to sneak away for a while.

So consider this your official Isle of Palms dog newsletter. Let’s talk about the best pet friendly things to do on Isle of Palms.

Beach Time (The Reason You Came)

Let’s start with the most important topic.

Dogs are allowed on Isle of Palms beaches, but there are a few rules your humans should know.

Dogs may enjoy the beach any time of day, as long as they remain on leash.

Translation for dogs:
Morning zoomies and sunset sniff patrol are highly recommended.

The beaches here are wide, beautiful, and perfect for:

• Sand digging
• Seagull supervision
• Long walks with your humans
• Politely barking at the waves

Just remember that drinking ocean water is apparently “not advisable,” according to humans.

The Isle of Palms Sniff Tour

Isle of Palms is a small barrier island just outside Charleston, which makes it perfect for long dog walks and neighborhood exploring.

Some favorite routes include:

• Quiet residential streets near the beach
• Walking paths near the Isle of Palms Marina
• Beach access paths throughout the island
• Sunset strolls along Ocean Boulevard

Humans might call this a “walk.”

You and I know it’s actually important scent research.

Dog Friendly Restaurants on Isle of Palms

After a beach walk, your humans will probably get hungry. Fortunately, many Isle of Palms restaurants welcome dogs in their outdoor seating areas.

This is your moment to shine.

The key strategy is simple:

  1. Sit politely
  2. Look extremely adorable
  3. Receive dropped snacks

Your humans think they’re having dinner.

You are conducting advanced snack acquisition training.

When Your Humans Have Plans Without You

Now let’s discuss something important.

Sometimes your humans will want to do things where dogs aren’t allowed.

Maybe they are attending:

• A wedding
• A boat charter
• A special dinner
• A concert or event in Charleston

Before you panic, here is something many visitors don’t realize.

You can schedule a local pet sitter.

That’s right. Instead of waiting at home wondering where everyone went, a local Isle of Palms pet sitter can stop by your vacation rental to check in on you.

They can:

• Take you for a walk
• Feed you dinner
• Play with you
• Keep you company
• Make sure you feel comfortable in a new place

Sometimes all you need is a quick visit from a friendly human to help you settle into vacation life.

Important Safety Notes for Visiting Dogs

Dear Dogs,

Before we continue our island adventures, there are a few things your humans should know to help keep you safe while visiting Isle of Palms.

These are not meant to ruin your fun. They are simply part of being a responsible beach dog.

Watch Out for Hot Sand and Pavement

During the summer months, the sand and pavement on Isle of Palms can get very hot during the middle of the day.

If it feels hot to your human’s hand, it is definitely too hot for your paws.

Signs your paws may be getting burned include:

• Lifting paws frequently
• Walking strangely
• Refusing to walk
• Excessive licking of paw pads

The best strategy is simple:

Walk early in the morning or later in the evening.

This also happens to be the best time for beach walks anyway.

Coyotes Live on Isle of Palms

While Isle of Palms is a wonderful place for dogs, it is still a barrier island with wildlife.

Coyotes do live in the area, and they are most active during:

• Early morning
• Late evening
• Overnight hours

Coyotes typically avoid people, but small pets can sometimes attract their attention.

To stay safe:

• Keep dogs on leash during walks
• Do not leave dogs unattended outdoors
• Avoid walking in dark or isolated areas at night

Your humans may see signs around the island reminding visitors about wildlife. This is normal for coastal communities like Isle of Palms.

Local Veterinarians Near Isle of Palms

Hopefully you won’t need one during your vacation, but it’s always helpful to know where the nearest veterinarians are located.

Animal Medical Center of Mount Pleasant

Located about 15 minutes from Isle of Palms
1497 Wando Park Blvd
Mount Pleasant, SC
843-884-9838

Mount Pleasant Veterinary Hospital

990 Johnnie Dodds Blvd
Mount Pleasant, SC
843-881-7438

East Cooper Animal Hospital

885 Houston Northcutt Blvd
Mount Pleasant, SC
843-881-2244

These veterinary clinics regularly care for pets from Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, so they are familiar with beach-related concerns like paw injuries, salt water exposure, and wildlife encounters.

If your dog ever experiences an emergency, these clinics are the closest options for care.

A Final Reminder to Visiting Dogs

Isle of Palms is one of the most dog friendly beach towns near Charleston, and with a little awareness, it can be an incredible vacation for both dogs and their humans.

Remember to:

• Drink fresh water
• Take shade breaks
• Protect those paws from hot sand
• Keep an eye out for wildlife
• And enjoy every salty breeze

Now go back to supervising those seagulls.

Tail wags,
Your friends at Dreams N Druther
